Who can take part

  • You have a severe lung infection, major injury, shock, or other condition that can lead to ARDS.
  • Your breathing symptoms started less than 7 days ago.
  • You have fluid in both lungs that is not caused by a heart problem or too much IV fluids.
  • Your oxygen level in blood is low (PaO2/FiO2 of 300 or less) while on breathing support (PEEP of at least 5 cmH2O).
  • You have not been on a breathing tube for longer than 48 hours.
  • You do not have a condition that weakens your immune system, such as active cancer, transplant history, or certain blood problems.
