Who can take part

  • 18 years or older
  • Getting high-flow oxygen through your nose (at least 30 liters per minute), or using a breathing mask or tube with extra pressure
  • Low oxygen levels in your blood (PaO2/FiO2 ratio 300 or less) within 48 hours of joining
  • Cloudy areas on both lungs in a chest x-ray or CT scan, not caused by fluid from heart failure or lung collapse
  • Breathing failure not mainly due to heart problems or fluid overload (if no other cause is found, an echo of your heart is needed)
  • Not already on long-term oxygen or home breathing machines (except CPAP only for sleep apnea), and no other serious lung conditions like bleeding or scarring
