Who can take part

  • You have a type of esophageal cancer called squamous cell carcinoma that has spread to nearby lymph nodes but not to distant organs.
  • You are 70 years or older, or you cannot take IV chemotherapy because of other health problems and have severe trouble swallowing.
  • You have not had chemotherapy or radiation for esophageal cancer before.
  • Your cancer cannot be removed by surgery.
  • Your blood, kidney, and liver function are within acceptable levels.
