Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old
  • You have tetraplegia (weakness or paralysis in all four limbs) due to a brainstem or spinal cord injury
  • Your injury happened at least 6 months ago and your condition is stable (no major changes in feeling or movement)
  • Your arm muscles are very weak (grade 2 or less) and your leg muscles are at least moderately weak (grade 3 or less) on a standard muscle strength test
  • You are able to understand and follow instructions (score 20 or more on a short memory and thinking test)
  • You do not have other major health issues that would make surgery risky, such as heart disease, bleeding problems, or active infections
