Who can take part
- You are an adult needing emergency abdominal surgery (laparotomy).
- Your physical status is classified as ASA I, II, or III (generally healthy to having a serious disease that is not disabling).
- You do not have severe heart problems such as a weak heart pump (ejection fraction below 40%), heart block, irregular heartbeat, or tight heart valve disease.
- You are not currently unstable — meaning your average blood pressure is below 65 or you need medicine to keep it above 65.
- You do not have a high shock index (heart rate divided by systolic blood pressure greater than 1).
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you have no known allergy to paracetamol.
