  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have advanced heart failure and are getting a heart pump (LVAD) placed
  • A blood test for GDF-15 was done before your surgery
  • You can agree to take part (or a family member can agree for you)
  • You do not have an active infection or active cancer
  • You do not have severe liver failure

This trial tests if metformin, a medicine commonly used for diabetes, can help improve heart function in people who have a mechanical heart pump (LVAD). You may be able to join if you are between 18 and 75, have a continuous-flow LVAD, and have a condition called insulin resistance (where your body doesn't use insulin well) but your blood sugar levels are well-controlled.
