This trial tests if metformin, a medicine commonly used for diabetes, can help improve heart function in people who have a mechanical heart pump (LVAD). You may be able to join if you are between 18 and 75, have a continuous-flow LVAD, and have a condition called insulin resistance (where your body doesn't use insulin well) but your blood sugar levels are well-controlled.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old.
  • You have a continuous-flow LVAD (a type of heart pump like HeartMate 3 or HVAD).
  • Your body has insulin resistance (a condition where insulin doesn't work as well as it should).
  • Your average blood sugar over the past few months (HbA1c) is 6.5% or lower.
  • You do not have type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes with high blood sugar.
  • You are not currently taking any medicines to lower blood sugar, including insulin or pills.
