This study looks for proteins in the blood and eye fluids that may help doctors better understand and monitor three common eye conditions: age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment. If you have one of these conditions, or if you are a healthy control with no retinal disease, you may be able to help by giving a small sample of blood or fluid from your eye during a routine procedure.

Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You must be able to understand the study and give your permission (informed consent).
  • You are willing to follow the study schedule and procedures.
  • For patients in the study: you have age-related macular degeneration (intermediate or advanced), diabetic retinopathy, or are having surgery for a detached retina.
  • For people in the control group: you are having cataract surgery and have no known retinal disease, or you are an outpatient without retinal problems.
  • You cannot have an active eye infection or certain blood protein abnormalities.
