Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • Your carbon dioxide level (PaCO₂) is 50 mmHg or less.
  • Your oxygen level (PaO₂/FiO₂) is 300 or lower, meaning you need extra oxygen.
  • Your breathing machine can measure the pressure inside your esophagus (a tube that leads to your stomach).
  • Your breathing failure is not caused by heart failure, asthma, or a sudden worsening of COPD.
  • You do not have a collapsed lung (pneumothorax).
