Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher.
  • You are currently on a breathing machine with a tube in your windpipe and have been for less than 24 hours.
  • You are expected to need the breathing machine for at least 2 more days.
  • You do not have any major problems with your esophagus (like swollen veins, a recent surgery, or narrowing), severe bleeding or clotting issues, or other serious conditions that would make the study unsafe.
