Gentle lung breathing with heart-lung machine support for severe lung failure

Who can take part

  • Currently on a breathing tube and ventilator for 7 days or less
  • Severe lung injury confirmed in the last 48 hours with specific blood oxygen and chest imaging findings
  • Lungs showing signs of stiffness or difficulty removing carbon dioxide (measured by specific ventilator settings)
  • 18 years or older and not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Able to receive blood-thinning medication and have a special catheter placed in a large vein
  • No severe heart disease, recent heart attack, or serious blood clotting disorders
