Who can take part

  • Child must be 8 years old or younger
  • Child must be admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU)
  • Doctor has already decided to give the child extra fluids (10 ml per kilogram of body weight)
  • The hospital is already using an electrical cardiometry device to monitor the child's heart
  • Child must be able to lie on their back safely
  • No recent belly surgery or serious belly pain that would prevent gentle pressing on the abdomen
