Who can take part

  • You need major spine surgery scheduled under general anesthesia (not an emergency)
  • Your heart's pumping ability must be adequate (ejection fraction 35% or higher)
  • No history of brain conditions or current brain issues
  • Your lungs must be in reasonably good health (no severe lung disease)
  • Your body mass index should be 40 or lower
  • You cannot have a condition affecting your nervous system's automatic functions (like blood pressure or heart rate control)
