Brain Protection Treatment for Recent Stroke

Acute Ischemic Stroke

Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You have had an ischemic stroke (caused by a blood clot) in the middle cerebral artery territory, confirmed by a neurologist and imaging scans
  • Your stroke symptoms started within 48 hours before evaluation (or within 48 hours of when you were last seen well, if the exact time is unknown)
  • Your stroke severity score (NIHSS) is at least 6 at the time of enrollment
  • You have not had a previous stroke with lasting disability, or if you have, your disability is minimal (mRS score of 1 or less)
  • You are not currently taking certain brain-protective medications like memantine, ketamine, or lamitrigine, and you are not pregnant or breastfeeding
