New Heart Scan to Detect Blood Clots in Amyloid Heart Disease

This study tests a new type of imaging scan ([64Cu]FBP8 PET) to detect blood clots that may form in the heart's left atrial appendage (a small pouch in the heart) in patients with amyloid cardiomyopathy (a disease where abnormal protein builds up in heart muscle) who also have irregular heartbeat. The scan may help doctors catch clots earlier and prevent strokes.

Who can take part

  • You have amyloid cardiomyopathy (either ATTR or AL type) diagnosed by your doctor
  • You have a history of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (irregular heartbeats)
  • You had a TEE (transesophageal echocardiogram—a special heart ultrasound) done within the last 2 weeks, or you have one scheduled in the next 2 weeks
  • You can safely fit inside a PET/MR scanner and weigh 300 lbs or less
  • You have no electrical implants like a pacemaker, defibrillator, or brain stimulator
  • You have not had a stroke, heart attack, or major surgery in the last 3 months
