Vagus Nerve Stimulation to Help Spinal Cord Injury Recovery

This trial tests whether stimulating your vagus nerve (a major nerve in your neck) using a small electrical device can help improve movement and function after a spinal cord injury. You would wear a device on your ear during rehabilitation to see if it speeds up your recovery.

Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old and no older than 89
  • You have a spinal cord injury (from trauma or other causes) and are in early inpatient rehabilitation
  • You do not have a pacemaker, cochlear implant, or other implanted medical device
  • You do not have epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, or a history of irregular heartbeats
  • You do not have metal implants in your brain or skin damage/irritation where the ear electrode would go
  • For Phase 2 only: you completed Phase 1 and your doctor approves continuing, with intensive gait (walking) training in your care plan
