Who can take part
- Diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma (a type of cancer) confirmed by biopsy
- Cancer is located in the lower part of the rectum (less than 15 cm from the anus)
- Cancer is either early stage (T2 with no lymph node involvement) OR was found at stage 1 after endoscopic removal with at least one high-risk feature
- Willing to undergo chemotherapy, radiation, and local excision (tissue-sparing surgery) rather than total rectal removal
- No prior rectal cancer surgery or recurrent cancer
- No evidence of cancer spread to lymph nodes or other organs on imaging scans
