Understanding Fluid Changes in Hospitalized Heart Failure

Acute Decompensated Heart Failure

This study observes patients admitted to the hospital with heart failure that has suddenly worsened. Researchers will use daily ultrasound scans of your lungs to track fluid buildup and understand how the heart failure progresses during your hospital stay.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You are admitted to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, specifically to the Cardiology Progressive Care Unit
  • Your hospital admission is for acute (sudden) worsening of heart failure—either new or on top of existing heart failure
  • You are able to understand the study and give permission to participate
  • You are willing to have a brief ultrasound exam of your lungs performed every day while you are in the hospital
