Who can take part
- You are 40 years old or older
- You have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a serious lung condition) confirmed by past lung tests or clinical history
- You are in the ICU with acute respiratory failure and currently using a breathing machine or non-invasive breathing support
- Your medical team believes you may be ready to try breathing without full machine support
- You do not have a tracheostomy (a breathing tube in your neck) already in place
- You are stable enough for the study team to perform an ultrasound of your breathing muscles
