Who can take part

  • You have COPD and have been on a mechanical ventilator (breathing machine) for more than 24 hours
  • Your heart is stable and you don't need strong medications to support your blood pressure
  • Your oxygen levels are adequate on modest ventilator settings (oxygen level ≤50%, pressure support ≤8)
  • Your mind is clear and you can breathe on your own (not sedated or confused)
  • You successfully tolerated a trial of breathing without full ventilator support
  • You do not have nerve damage affecting your breathing muscles, collapsed lung, recent chest surgery, or imaging obstacles
