Who can take part

  • Confirmed diagnosis of liver cirrhosis (scarring) confirmed by blood tests, imaging, or physical exam
  • Enlarged spleen with low blood cell counts (hypersplenism)
  • Never had bleeding from enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach
  • Age between 18 and 80 years old
  • Liver function rated as Child-Pugh Class A or B (not the most severe)
  • No previous kidney disease or acute kidney injury, and able to complete 24 months of follow-up visits
