  • You are between 18 and 75 years old
  • Your surgery is scheduled in advance (not an emergency)
  • You can understand and follow instructions for breathing exercises
  • Your heart is stable and functioning well before surgery
  • You do not have serious lung disease like COPD, asthma, or tuberculosis
  • You do not have recent rib fractures, chest trauma, or conditions that prevent coughing
