Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for laparoscopic abdominal surgery (such as gallbladder removal, colon surgery, gastric sleeve, hernia repair, or appendix removal)
  • You are between 18 and 60 years old
  • You are in generally good health or have only mild, well-controlled medical conditions
  • You do not have a known allergy to local anesthetic medicines (numbing medications)
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medications at full strength
  • You do not have serious heart rhythm problems, vascular disease in your legs, connective tissue disease, suspected cancer, or active abdominal infection
