Who can take part

  • Age 18 or older
  • At least one long-term heart, lung, or brain condition (such as heart failure, COPD, stroke, or high blood pressure)
  • Currently on a breathing machine for at least 24 hours and expected to need it for at least 72 more hours
  • Alert enough to participate (not heavily sedated) and not paralyzed by medication
  • Adequate oxygen levels in blood while on the breathing machine
