Who can take part

  • You are 65 years old or older
  • You have significant medical conditions (classified as ASA III or IV, meaning your doctor considers you at higher surgical risk)
  • You need surgery on one leg for a broken hip, thighbone, knee, or shinbone
  • You can safely receive spinal anesthesia (numbing injection in the spine)
  • You do not have severe heart failure, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or a history of spinal surgery
  • Your body mass index is 40 or lower
