This study tests whether doxepin (a sleep aid) alone, or combined with ramelteon (another sleep medication), helps patients sleep better after knee replacement surgery compared to placebo (inactive treatment). Better sleep after surgery may help with pain control and recovery.

Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for primary total knee replacement (first-time knee replacement surgery, not revision)
  • You are between 18 and 80 years old
  • You are not currently taking prescription sleep aids (like Ambien or Trazodone), though over-the-counter sleep aids are okay
  • You do not have a history of major sleep problems like sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome
  • You have not taken narcotic pain medications more than once in the past 3 months
  • You do not have certain eye conditions (narrow-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma, or glaucoma eye procedures)
