Heart surgery with chest artery grafts: infection and pain study

Who can take part

  • Age 18 or older
  • Scheduled for bypass surgery (CABG) with a cut down the middle of the chest (median sternotomy) using the internal mammary artery from the left side of the chest
  • Able to provide written consent to participate
  • No emergency surgery (must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance)
  • No prior chest surgery or radiation therapy to the chest
  • No active infections or antibiotics at time of surgery, and no severe kidney disease
