Who can take part

  • Your baby is a premature infant born at 34 weeks of pregnancy or less.
  • Your baby is less than 7 days old when checked for the study.
  • Your baby is in the Duke NICU and has been prescribed ampicillin for possible early infection.
  • You must give permission (informed consent) for your baby to join.
  • Your baby does not have a confirmed infection or a major birth defect that would affect survival.
