  • Age 18–65 years old
  • High uric acid levels (measured by blood test) without ever having had a gout attack or gout symptoms
  • Never taken urate-lowering medications (like allopurinol or febuxostat) before
  • Healthy liver function (liver enzymes not more than twice the normal limit)
  • Healthy kidney function (eGFR at least 60 mL/min)
  • No severe heart disease, active infection, or stomach ulcers
