Space maintainers for children after early tooth loss

This study compares three different types of devices that keep space open in a child's mouth after an early primary (baby) tooth is lost, so the permanent adult tooth can come in properly. Your child will be randomly assigned to receive one of the three types and will be followed to see which works best.

Who can take part

  • Child is between 5 and 10 years old
  • Child has lost one primary molar (back baby tooth) on one side of the mouth
  • X-rays show the permanent adult tooth is developing normally underneath
  • Parent or guardian can provide written permission and child can assent to participation
  • Child does not have a systemic disease (condition affecting the whole body) that impacts bone or tooth growth
  • Child's mouth is clean enough for band placement (less than 50% plaque buildup)
