  • Age 18–80 years
  • Scheduled for primary (first-time) total hip or knee replacement for osteoarthritis
  • Hemoglobin level of at least 9 g/dL (a measure of red blood cells)
  • Good overall health (ASA physical status I–III, meaning no severe organ problems)
  • Weight at least 45 kg (about 100 lbs) and BMI under 40 kg/m²
  • Able to understand and sign consent forms and attend follow-up visits
