Who can take part

  • Age 18 or older
  • Confirmed pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lungs) diagnosed by CT scan within 24 hours of arrival
  • Blood tests and heart ultrasound completed within 24 hours of hospital admission
  • No active blood cancer or recent chemotherapy that affects blood cell production
  • No red blood cell transfusions in the past 90 days
  • No severe kidney disease (eGFR < 15) or need for dialysis
