- Age 18 or older
- Confirmed pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lungs) diagnosed by CT scan within 24 hours of arrival
- Blood tests and heart ultrasound completed within 24 hours of hospital admission
- No active blood cancer or recent chemotherapy that affects blood cell production
- No red blood cell transfusions in the past 90 days
- No severe kidney disease (eGFR < 15) or need for dialysis
