  • You are scheduled for planned (elective) heart surgery
  • You are 18 years old or older
  • Your overall health is rated as ASA I, II, or III (generally good to moderate health, not severely ill)
  • You have never had heart surgery before
  • You are not currently treated for chronic pain or don't have a history of long-term pain treatment
  • You do not have a history of heavy alcohol use or substance abuse
