Who can take part
- You are scheduled for planned (elective) heart surgery
- You are 18 years old or older
- Your overall health is rated as ASA I, II, or III (generally good to moderate health, not severely ill)
- You have never had heart surgery before
- You are not currently treated for chronic pain or don't have a history of long-term pain treatment
- You do not have a history of heavy alcohol use or substance abuse
