This study tests whether botulinum toxin (Botox) injected into the piriformis muscle—a muscle deep in the buttock that can pinch the sciatic nerve—reduces pain and improves quality of life. You qualify if you have one-sided buttock and leg pain that hasn't improved with physical therapy or pain medication.

Who can take part

  • Diagnosed with piriformis syndrome (buttock/leg pain from a pinched nerve) on one side for at least 3 months
  • Pain rated at least 4 out of 10 on a pain scale
  • Have tried physical therapy, muscle relaxants, or pain medication without enough relief
  • MRI or CT scan showing no herniated disc or severe scarring of the piriformis muscle
  • No history of botulinum toxin injections or piriformis muscle surgery
  • Health insurance coverage and ability to keep a daily symptom diary
