- Age 18–65 years old
- Scheduled for laparoscopic (minimally invasive) shoulder surgery, such as shoulder replacement or arthroscopic repair
- In good overall health (American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I or II—meaning no serious ongoing health conditions or only mild, well-controlled conditions)
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
- No history of allergy or bad reaction to dexmedetomidine or bupivacaine (the numbing medication)
- No serious kidney or liver disease, and no bleeding disorders
