Who can take part

  • Histologically confirmed clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (diagnosed by tissue sample) at advanced stage (stage IV) or unsuitable for surgery/radiation
  • No prior systemic chemotherapy or immunotherapy for kidney cancer (prior adjuvant therapy allowed if no VEGF/VEGFR agents and recurrence after 6+ months)
  • At least one measurable tumor lesion visible on imaging
  • Karnofsky Performance Status score of 70 or higher (able to carry out most normal activities with some help)
  • Age 18–75 years with life expectancy greater than 3 months
  • Adequate blood counts, liver and kidney function, and ability to take oral tablets
