Who can take part

  • You are 40 years or older
  • This is your first time having heart surgery through the breastbone
  • You have little to no chronic pain before surgery (less than 3 out of 10)
  • You are not taking daily opioid painkillers (like morphine or oxycodone) for more than 4 weeks
  • You do not have nerve pain in the ribs, numbness in hands/feet, or serious mental health conditions
  • You are having a scheduled (non-emergency) surgery and are stable enough for the operation
