Who can take part

  • You are 18 to 65 years old and weigh enough to be classified as obese (BMI of 30 or higher)
  • You are scheduled for elective (planned, non-emergency) surgery that requires general anesthesia and an endotracheal tube (breathing tube down your throat)
  • You are in good enough health for surgery (ASA physical status II or III)
  • You have healthy upper and lower front teeth and can move your lower jaw normally
  • You have never had facial surgery, trauma, or jaw problems that limit your jaw movement
  • You can follow simple instructions and agree to perform a jaw-bite test during the exam
