Learning about alpha-synuclein protein in brain health and disease

Lewy Body Disease

This study helps people understand a protein called alpha-synuclein that may be related to memory problems and movement disorders. Researchers will either test your spinal fluid or skin to look for this protein, then discuss the results with you and measure how you're doing over time.

Who can take part

  • You can give permission for the study yourself, or have a caregiver give permission for you
  • You see a primary care doctor or neurologist regularly for your health
  • You're willing to have a skin biopsy or spinal tap (lumbar puncture) to test for alpha-synuclein, or you already have test results we can use
  • If you're healthy: Your thinking and memory are normal (score 26–30 on a mental test), and you have no serious illnesses
  • If you have symptoms: A neurologist or movement disorder specialist has referred you and you have been diagnosed with or may have Lewy body disease, Parkinson's disease, or related conditions
