Who can take part

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and speak English.
  • If you have a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (like schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder), you need to have been stable for at least 6 months without hospitalization or medication changes.
  • If you are a healthy volunteer, you must not have any psychiatric diagnosis or first-degree relative with schizophrenia.
  • You cannot have metal in your head, dental implants, permanent retainers, or medical devices like a pacemaker.
  • You cannot have a history of seizures, epilepsy, or take medications that lower seizure threshold (like clozapine, bupropion, or certain sleep aids).
  • You must be free of sleep disorders, night-shift work, claustrophobia, back problems, and certain hair styles that can't be removed.
