Chest belt breathing trainer for collapsed lungs after surgery

This study tests if using a special chest-monitoring belt (EIT) while you practice deep breathing with a plastic device (incentive spirometer) can help re-inflate collapsed lung areas after major chest or belly surgery. You'll need to be in the ICU or recovery unit, breathing on your own, and have lung collapse confirmed by ultrasound.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You've had major chest or upper belly surgery and are now breathing on your own in a special recovery unit.
  • You are awake and able to follow instructions to use a breathing trainer (incentive spirometer) and wear a sensor belt on your chest.
  • A lung ultrasound shows some collapsed areas (atelectasis) or poor air movement in the back or side of your lungs.
  • A special electrical test (EIT) during quiet breathing shows that the back part of your lungs isn't getting enough air, and there's room for improvement.
