Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 70 years old
- You are currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) on a breathing machine for at least 2 days
- Your doctor suspects you have pneumonia from the breathing tube (called ventilator-associated pneumonia)
- You agree to participate, or a family member or legal representative can give permission for you
- You do not have certain serious health conditions like liver failure, kidney failure on dialysis, or a weakened immune system
- You are not taking zinc supplements and do not have a disorder affecting zinc levels
