Can spinal cord stimulation repair small nerve fibers?

This study tests whether a special type of spinal cord stimulation (which uses mild electrical pulses to block pain) can help repair damaged small nerve fibers in people with small fiber neuropathy. If you have chronic nerve pain and meet the criteria, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are 19 years or older.
  • You have been diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy based on a skin biopsy that showed a lower-than-normal number of small nerve fibers.
  • You have had chronic nerve pain rated as at least 6 out of 10 on a pain scale.
  • Your doctor believes you may benefit from a type of spinal cord stimulation therapy that uses a special electrical waveform (ECAP-controlled SCS).
  • You are willing to have two skin biopsies (one now and one after 12 months) and complete sensation tests.
  • You do not have uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c over 8.5%), lupus, alcohol abuse, or other reasons that could damage your nerves, and you are not pregnant or planning pregnancy.
