Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and willing to sign a consent form.
  • You have had a stem cell or solid organ transplant, or you have a type of TMA caused by medication.
  • If you have TMA, you must have a diagnosis confirmed by biopsy or by having at least 4 out of 6 specific blood and symptom changes (like anemia, low platelets, high LDH, schistocytes on blood smear, new or worsening high blood pressure, or protein in urine).
  • If you don't have TMA, you may fit if you have had a transplant and either have a symptomatic viral infection (like a cold or flu) or no symptomatic infection.
  • You cannot have a family or personal history of a rare form of TMA (aHUS), certain cancer (except the blood cancer you were treated for), or have taken certain immune drugs (complement inhibitors or interferon blockers) before.
  • If female, you cannot be pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy in the next year without using very reliable birth control.
