Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are having a first-time total knee replacement on one knee only.
  • Your surgery will use spinal anesthesia (numbing from the waist down), not general anesthesia.
  • You do not take strong painkillers (opioids) daily or have chronic pain.
  • You do not have nerve damage from diabetes or other conditions.
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners that cannot be paused.
  • You have no skin infection where the injection will be given.
  • You are not allergic to local anesthetics (numbing medicines).
