Purple potatoes for prehypertension in younger men

PRE-HYPERTENSION

This study tests whether eating purple-fleshed potatoes can help lower blood pressure in men with prehypertension. Participants will eat purple potatoes daily for two 4-week periods with a break in between.

Who can take part

  • Be a man between 18 and 40 years old.
  • Have slightly high blood pressure (120-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic) but not taking blood pressure medicine.
  • Not be a smoker or do very intense exercise.
  • Not take medicines or supplements that affect the study (like blood pressure or cholesterol drugs, antibiotics, NSAIDs, or antioxidants).
  • Be willing to eat about 3 cups of purple potatoes a day for two 4-week periods.
  • Not have chronic gut, kidney, or diabetes problems.
