  • You are scheduled for elective (not emergency) heart valve surgery.
  • Your doctor agrees you are healthy enough for either anesthesia method.
  • You are willing to participate and can give written consent (or have a legal representative).
  • You do not have severe lung, heart, liver, kidney, or brain disease that would make the new method unsafe.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
