Embolization for fluid buildup in advanced cirrhosis

This study tests a procedure called proximal splenic artery embolization (PSAE) to treat fluid buildup in the belly (ascites) that doesn't get better with standard medicines. Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have cirrhosis that has led to fluid buildup in your belly (ascites) that is not controlled by maximum doses of water pills (diuretics) and has required a drainage procedure (paracentesis) at least twice a month for the past 3 months.
  • You are not a good candidate for a procedure called TIPS (a shunt to relieve pressure in the liver), either because of medical reasons or anatomy.
  • You do not have other causes of high blood pressure in the liver, such as blood clots or heart problems.
  • You have had a CT or MRI scan within the last 60 days showing that the main veins of your liver and spleen are open and no reason to avoid the procedure.
  • You are expected to live at least 6 more months and are willing to follow the study schedule.
