Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old and pregnant with one baby.
  • The baby has a severe left- or right-sided diaphragm defect with underdeveloped lungs and the liver is up in the chest.
  • You are between 27 and 29 weeks pregnant when the procedure is done.
  • You can live within 30 minutes of NYU Langone Health from the time of the procedure until the balloon is removed.
  • You have a support person to stay with you near NYU Langone Health during this time.
  • You are willing to follow strict activity restrictions (no exercise, intercourse, or work) for the rest of the pregnancy.
