This study is looking at early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and heart health. It compares people newly diagnosed with RA (within the last 6 months) to healthy people of similar age and sex. The goal is to see if there are early signs of hardening of the arteries in people with RA.

Who can take part

  • If you have rheumatoid arthritis, it must have been diagnosed within the last 6 months.
  • If you are a healthy volunteer, you must be between 18 and 49 years old and have no known inflammatory, autoimmune, or chronic diseases.
  • You must not have established cardiovascular disease (e.g., coronary artery disease, prior heart attack, stroke, peripheral artery disease, or heart failure).
  • You must not have diabetes, high blood pressure, or abnormal blood fats requiring lipid-lowering therapy.
  • You must not have chronic kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid problems, or other significant hormonal disorders.
  • You must not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You must not have other connective tissue diseases (e.g., lupus, scleroderma, Sjogren's syndrome) or other inflammatory joint conditions (e.g., psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis).
